Son of John and Elizabeth Slydell; husband of Beatrice Eleanor Slydell of 1, Dalkey Villa, St Leonard's Road, Hayling Island and previously of Tournerbury Lane; father of Ida and of twins, Doris (Tupper), now of Havant and Kathleen (Smith), now of Alverstoke. Ernest worked for Hayler's the master butchers in Elm Grove before the war. The twins were born in Manor Road.

Ernest was gassed in the trenches and returned to Hayling to be nursed by his wife, dying just six weeks after the twins were born. All the daughters were baptised at St Mary's Church and attended Hayling C.E. School.

In 2000, to celebrate Doris's birthday, Doris's daughter, Margaret Hilman arranged for a short, but moving ceremony to be held at  Ernest's  graveside  when standards of the British Legion were draped over his gravestone. Doris's elder daughter, Janice Slade was able to be present at the ceremony along with her mother and sister, Margaret.
